The Christmas Lunch Walk

Claire has kindly volunteered to lead “The Christmas Lunch” walk on Sunday 11th December, starting at 10:45 am from the tea shop in Balcombe.

The tea shop is at grid ref. TQ 309306 (web page http://thebalcombetearooms.co.uk/). It can be reached from the train station by walking north on Rocks Lane, crossing over London Road and then going up Bramble Hill.

A train from Brighton to Balcombe departs 10.11am and arrives 10.38am.

The walk is a circular, 7.5 miles in length.

Lunch will be at the half-way point, at the White Hart in West Hoathly (http://www.sussexgoodpubguide.co.uk/whitehartwesthoathly.htm).

Latest Walk: Steyning Circular

I wasn’t able to make David’s walk today, but if anyone who did attend wants to leave a comment, please do so.

Latest Walk: Rushlake Green Figure-of-Eight Walk

The weather for Tina’s walk today was overcast, wet, but actually not that cold. We started from outside the Horse & Groom pub in Rushlake Green, a lovely little village not for from Heathfield in East Sussex. The majority of the walk (5.5 miles) was in the morning; the afternoon “half” was only about 3 miles. Lunch was at the Horse & Groom, where the food was excellent – my steak was nice and tender – but a little pricey.

Many thanks to Tina for leading the walk and to everyone who attended. If you were there and feel like adding a comment, feel free to do so.

Latest Walk: Stanmer Woods

The glorious weather continued for our latest walk, Stanmer Woods, led by Steve. It was a challenging walk starting in Stanmer Villas in Brighton, and passing through the local golf course, before crossing the main road into the woods. A large number of “little loops” later saw us eventually arive at the Stanmer tea-rooms, where we were met by Tina and Maggie, who joined us for the second half. The afternoon section saw us take a similar route in reverse, although it was shorter and more of the walk was downhill.

Many thanks to Steve for leading the walk; if you attended and want to leave a comment, feel free to do so.

Photos from Autumn on Ashdown

Mark Seeger has again supplied me with some photos taken on a walk. Many thanks Mark!

The photos were taken on last Sunday’s walk around Ashdown Forest, led by Claire. The excellent weather gave us all many pleasant views throughout the day.

We start with a view of a rainbow at ground level:

Somewhere, over the rainbow...

Next is a view of the forest:

Tall trees

Ashdown Forest was made famous by the work of A.A.Milne (and his illustrator E.H.Shepard). Here is a plaque commemorating their work on Winnie the Pooh:

Finally, here are a couple of views of the Pooh Sticks bridge, featuring the people on the walk:

Latest Walk: Autumn on Ashdown

The wonderful weather continues! Claire’s walk today, “Autumn on Ashdown”, took place in sunshine. As it was a longer walk by our usual standards at 11.5 miles, it represented a challenge for the 18 walkers that turned out for it. The walk itself passed through Ashdown Forest, culminating close to the end with a visit to the famous “Pooh Sticks” bridge. Lunch was at a gardening centre cafe, which seemed overwhelmed by the number of people (not just us) who had decided to turn up on account of the excellent weather.

Many thanks to Claire for leading the walk. If you went on the walk and want to leave a comment, feel free to do so. Mark Seeger has promised some more photos of the walk, which I shall put up when I have received them.

Photos from Cowfold Walk

Mark Seeger took some photos on the Cowfold Walk last Sunday, which he has kindly supplied for the website. To view a larger version of each photo, just click on it.

Below is a photo taken at the end of the walk. Sussex Area Secretary Clive Grummet, who is half way through his plan to attend walks held by every group in the area, is second from the left, while Gemma Petty, Group Walks Development Officer at Ramblers Central Office, is second from the right (next to her mum).

The walk went through the pleasant woodland to the north of Cowfold. Here is a typical example:

As is so often the case in Sussex, the architect is as spectacular as the scenery.

Not everyone is welcoming, however…

Thanks to everyone who came on the walk, and we hope to see as many of you as possible soon!

Latest Walk: Cowfold Circular

Our latest walk, last Sunday, was nominated as the Sussex Young Walkers’ inaugural walk as a flexigroup. The flexigroup concept has been introduced by the Ramblers to reduce the bureaucratic requirements for groups where there is no particular need for a formal commitee, AGM and other such things. Sussex Young Walkers has been nominated to try out the idea. In practice, we will continue to organise walks, but hopefully the change will make it easier to concentrate on publicising the group and expanding its activities.

In addition to the usual collection of young walkers, we also had some representatives from Sussex Area and Central Office, including Clive Grummet, the Area Chairman, and Gemma Petty, the Group Walks Development Office at Central Office.

The walk itself went well. The weather was better than expected for early October, which was a great help, and the ground was largely dry underfoot. I had not previously walked much in this area, although, like quite a few people, I have driven along the A272 through Cowfold more times than I can remember! It was therefore an interesting adventure for me working out the walk in an unfamiliar region of Sussex.

The morning half of the walk saw us proceed through the woods and fields to the north of Cowfold.

We stopped at the Half Moon in Warninglid at lunch; some of us just a drink (and possibly a packet of crisps), while others opted for a ploughman’s or even a Sunday roast. The food was rated highly by those who tried it.

The way back was similar, although we encountered some rather overgrown paths and a fallen fingerpost, which had confused me when I had pre-walked this walk.

Many thanks to all who came on the walk. If you attended and want to leave a comment, feel free to do so.

Latest Walk: Plumpton-Ditchling Circular

Steve led the walk on Saturday, which started at Plumpton station, and went over to Ditchling and back again. Lunch was at the Bull in Ditchling.

The weather threatened to turn bad, but held and was actually rather pleasant. Lunch at the Bull was good, although some thought that it was a bit too much of a gastropub.

Many thanks to Steve for leading a lovely walk. If you attended and want to leave a comment, feel free to do so.

Ramblers: Save Our Woodland Walks!

The Ramblers will be co-organising a rally and ramble on the issue of Forestry sales on Saturday 8th October meeting at 12 noon on Saturday 8th October at the south end of the main car park in Friston Forest, at TV518996.

Buses 12 (between Brighton and Eastbourne) and the Cuckmere Ramblerbus (between Berwick station and Seaford) pass within 150 metres.

Speakers will give examples of what has happened to Sussex woods that have already been sold off and will explain what will happen next with the campaign.

The rally will be followed by a five mile walk through Friston Forest, possibly returning via open land to which access was won under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act.

For more details ring Chris Smith on 01273 474070 or email chris.smith@hbhelp.co.uk.
